For Microsoft Windows users, several system flaws are discovered during the usage of many programs that come with the operating system and its accompanying software. One of these errors is the “0x800CCC0E” error which is a result caused by a conflict while using Microsoft Outlook Express. Microsoft Outlook Express is a light electronic mail (e-mail) client made to centralize the user’s single or several e-mail addresses without the need for logging into a browser. Microsoft Outlook Express was issued as a standard, low end version of the powerful and standalone Microsoft Office Outlook mail client. The 0x800CCC0E refers to issues with the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). The user will receive a dialog or message box appearing with the message “The connection to the server has failed. Account: , Server: , Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure (SSL): No, Socket Error: 10051, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E.”

The Root Cause of SMTP Error 0x800CCC0E

Within Microsoft Outlook Express, an action or behavior is executed while connected to the internet using other Microsoft networks (MSN.com, Windows Messenger, NetMeeting, etc.). Microsoft Outlook Express prevents messages being sent to SMTP servers while being connected to the other Microsoft networks. The conflict occurs as the messages to the Microsoft networks and the incoming e-mail to Outlook Express are simultaneously being transferred via the SMTP server. The Error Number: 0x800CCC0E is triggered because of a built in behavior with Microsoft Outlook Express. Fortunately, the 0x800CCC0E SMTP error can be resolved.

Correcting the 0x800CCC0E Error

For correcting the SMTP 0x800CCC0E error, Microsoft Outlook Express should be set up to allow for the SMTP server to be the same as any Microsoft network program SMTP’s server address.

In the “Properties” window, click on the tab labeled “Server”. Delete any information in the “Outgoing Mail (SMTP)” text box under the section “Server Information”; type “smtp.live.com” (without quotation marks) in the now emptied text box.
For the “Outgoing Mail Server” section, select the checkbox beside “My Server Requires Authentication” and click the “Settings” button. Click the “Log On Using” button under the “Login Information” section.
In the “Account Name” textbox, input the username of the MSN address you use; type the matching password in the “Password” text box and select the checkbox labeled “Log On Using Secure Password Authentication”.
