Find Your LinkSys Router IP
Linksys is a brand that manufactures broadband routers. The default IP address for any Linksys broadband router is 192.168.1.1. Its the default address set at the factory. You can change it any time using the router’s administrative console.
Default Address
192.168.1.1 is an IPv4 network address. Only one device in the network should be set to use this address, to avoid network conflicts.
Setting the Configuration
You can set the configuration of your router at any time by following this set of instructions:
First connect your computer to the router using a standard CAT5 cable. Connect your computer to any one of the 4 LAN ports on the back of the router. Do not plug the “cable to uplink” port next to the Power. When the router and the computer start, you will see lights flicking on the port where the cable is plugged. If you don’t then your cable might be damaged.
Noting Network Settings
When you see them on the screen write down all of your ISP’s network settings. Some ISPs require the hostname or the domain name to be entered in the DNS settings. Your computer may then request the IP configuration from the DHCP server.
Once the information is correct, the router will start acting like a DHCP server and it will manage the configurations of any client on the network.
Click “Obtain an IP automatically on a network” to get an IP address.
Using Release and Renew
If the IP address 192.168.1.100 is displayed, then the router already has an IP address. If there is any other number on the display, click the Release and Renew buttons to get the right IP address.
In order to configure the router you should open your browser and enter 192.168.1.1 in the address bar and enter the default password (“password”). The LAN IP address is the same address of the router’s IP address.
The broadband ISP will use the DHCP to provide IP addresses to the customer. If you are a DSL user then check the PPPoE settings.
The WAN Port
Now plug your WAN port in the router and you will get the address automatically. To get a new IP address, click on DHCP Release and DHCP Renew on the status page.
Change the password also to make it more complex, use 8-12 characters.
