Play WMV Files

What WMV is

Lets learn a little more about this format. WMV was developed by Microsoft for internet streaming, but you can view WMV files from your hard drive or other media. The current version of WMV is WMV9. In order to play a WMV file you will need to have a codec.which is software that can read a file format and create video images and audio from the data provided. This codecs are extremely easy to come by and (usually) free.

Playing WMV files on Microsoft Windows

If your computer has Microsoft Windows you should have no problems playing WMV files. All you need is a decent amount of ram, a video card, sound card and fast processor. Today the vast majority of computer users can view WMV files smoothly.

Window’s Media Player (WMP) is already loaded on your computer and it already has the codec required to view video and audio files.

To play your WMV file simply launch Windows Media Player and choose the WMV file you wish to play. Other Media players such as DivX, Winamp and VLC can easily play WMV files as well.

Playing WMV files on a Mac

If you own a Mac, you can also enjoy WMV, using Windows Media Components for Quicktime.

Playing WMV files on a Computer with Linux

There are quite a few media players that operate on Linux with the codec for WMV files. Among them: VLC player, Essential Media Package and Xine.
