VoIP
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) refers to the transmission of voice traffic over IP-based networks.
Since the success of IP in data networking (it became the world standard for data networking) it was only a matter of time before it was adapted to voice networking.
VoIP Economics 101
Part of VoIP´s popularity is due to its cost advantage over traditional telepone networks. Instead of paying a per-minute charge for long-distance calls, VoIP calls can are placed across the Internet.
Most Internet Service Providers use a flat monthly fee structure.
If you use the Internet for both data traffic and voice calls you can get rid of one monthly payment and, as stated above, VoIP plans do not charge a per-minute fee for long distance.
If you use VoIP for International calls, you can save quite a lot of money.
VoIP Telephones
You can connect to a VoIP network in 3 ways:
I. Using a computer with speakers and a microphone
II. Using a VoIP telephone
III. Using a “normal” telephone with a VoIP adapter
What types of calls exist in VIP networks?
VoIP calls can be placed either to other VoIP devices, or to normal telephones on the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network).
The term for a call from a VoIP device to a PSTN device is a “PC-to-Phone” call, it doesnt matter if the VoIP device is not a PC.
The term for a call from a VoIP device to another VoIP device is a “PC-to-PC” calls, even if none of the devices involved is a PC.
